Burlon Craig (1914–2002), Vale, North Carolina, rare Catawba Valley pottery jar, wheel-thrown with flared rim and gray-green alkaline glaze, the front decorated with a freehand light-colored slip motif depicting a stylized potted flower. The combination of traditional vessel form and spontaneous slip decoration makes this an unusual example within Craig's body of work. Craig was instrumental in preserving the Catawba Valley alkaline-glazed stoneware tradition and received the NEA National Heritage Fellowship in 1984. 7" mint condition as fired from the aritst.
