Louise Brown pottery devil face jug, circa 1993, of tall cylindrical form with an intensely red surface and boldly modeled facial features including large applied ears, curved horns, heavy eyebrows, moustache and goatee, and an open mouth fitted with irregular white teeth. An expressive continuation of the Brown family's celebrated Western North Carolina face-jug tradition, combining the established devil-jug vocabulary with a particularly vivid and theatrical treatment. The Brown family operated its pottery in Arden, North Carolina, beginning in 1924 and became nationally associated with fanciful face and devil vessels. 9" mint condition as fired from the aritst.
