Brown family pottery face jug, either Davis Pennington Brown (1895–1967) or Evan Javan Brown Sr. (1897–1980), Arden, North Carolina, with tall cylindrical form, applied facial features, inset eyes, prominent nose, open mouth and irregular teeth beneath a dark surface. Brown family face jugs represent an important Western North Carolina folk-pottery tradition. Davis and Javan Brown established Brown's Pottery in Arden in 1924, producing utilitarian pottery before becoming particularly recognized for art pottery and imaginative face vessels. Comparable examples stamped Brown Pottery have likewise been cataloged as the work of Davis or Javan Brown when individual authorship cannot be established. 15" mint condition as fired from the aritst.
