Jacob Dorris Craven (1827–1895), Randolph and Moore counties, North Carolina, signed stoneware milk crock with an unusual warm olive-brown glaze. The wheel-thrown vessel has a gently tapered cylindrical body and broad projecting rim, with glaze variation and firing character throughout. Craven was an important nineteenth-century North Carolina potter whose signed salt-glazed and other stoneware includes jugs, jars, crocks and cream risers. His work is particularly desirable when retaining the impressed “J.D. CRAVEN” maker’s mark. 6" mint condition as fired from the aritst.
