Brown family pottery face jug, Arden, North Carolina, circa 1930, covered in a glossy dark Albany-slip glaze and featuring a strongly modeled face with applied ears, heavy eyelids, long nose, open mouth and irregular teeth. Brown's Pottery was established in Arden in 1924 by brothers Davis Pennington Brown (1895–1967) and Evan Javan Brown Sr. (1897–1980), whose family had previously operated a pottery in Georgia. The Browns became particularly celebrated for their fanciful face and devil jugs; Davis is credited with making the pottery's first devil jug in the early 1920s. 9" mint condition as fired from the aritst.
