Jehiel Johnson (circa 1784/1785–1833) American pewter bowl, circa 1825, of broad circular form with gently sloping sides and molded rim. Johnson was an early American pewtersmith associated with Middletown, Connecticut, and briefly Fayetteville, North Carolina. Documentary evidence places him working as a pewtersmith in Fayetteville around 1818–1819, making his surviving wares particularly significant to collectors of early North Carolina decorative arts. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a Johnson pewter plate dated 1815–1825, while other documented North Carolina-associated examples bear his characteristic touch marks.
