Alamance County, North Carolina, earthenware “dirt dish,” circa 1870, of broad shallow circular form with gently sloping sides and darkened rim. The warm ochre-brown glazed surface displays pronounced firing variation, wear and concentric throwing marks. Commonly referred to by collectors as a “dirt dish,” this type of utilitarian earthenware represents an important aspect of nineteenth-century North Carolina domestic pottery and the long ceramic tradition of the Alamance County region. 10.5" diameter good condition for its age, no repairs, see photos.
