Billy Ray Hussey (b. 1955, Robbins, North Carolina) elaborate glazed pottery figural depicting the biblical story of Samson and Delilah, with Delilah supporting the reclining figure of Samson in a dramatically modeled composition. The figures are rendered with expressive facial features, detailed hair and clothing, and warm earthen glazes with contrasting accents. Hussey grew up in the Seagrove pottery tradition; his grandfather was potter J.H. Jones and his great-uncle was Melvin L. Owens. He learned pottery in Owens's shop as a child and opened his own shop in 1988. His work ranges from traditional vessels to ambitious narrative and figural sculpture and is represented in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. 9" mint condition as fired from the aritst.
