Billy Ray Hussey (b. 1955, Robbins, North Carolina) large and highly expressive glazed pottery lion, modeled standing on an oval base with head raised and mouth open in a roar. The figure features deeply worked texturing to the mane and hindquarters with mottled brown, black, green and ochre glazes. Hussey grew up in the renowned Seagrove pottery community and began learning pottery in the shop of his great-uncle Melvin L. Owens. Known for both traditional pottery and imaginative figural works, Hussey's pottery is represented in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. 8"x8" mint condition as fired from the aritst.
